Our Day

Life in a religious community in many ways is precisely like your life now: we have to cook, clean, go to school or work, and we fit in recreation when we can. Life in a religious community also has some unique differences, such as community prayer twice a day in our private chapel and extra service at church. Want to know precisely what an average day for one of our brothers is like?

Monday through Friday

7:00 a.m. Morning prayers. On Tuesdays and Thursdays we celebrate mass.
8:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. After prayer or mass, students go to school or work and novices stay at the house for prayer, reflection, and community work. In addition to their responsibilties at school and with the community, many of our brothers also hold part-time jobs to help support the community. Breakfast and lunch are at the convenience of each individual brother as suits his class or work schedule.
5:30 p.m. Meditation
6:00 p.m. Evening Prayer
6:30 p.m. Dinner. Just like at home, all the brothers are expected to be home for dinner! We make sure that we all come together for at least one communal meal every day.
8:00 p.m. After dinner, the brothers have "free" time. For the students, that means homework; novices have some recreation time. Oh, yeah, those dishes and dirty laundry don't wash themselves, either. The brothers in the community take turns to maintain the household, mow the lawn, prepare meals, do the grocery shopping, run errands, and just about everything else that any family does.

Saturday

Saturday is much like the weekdays, except that in the morning, rather than going to work or school, we work together to complete household chores. In the afternoon, there is free time for homework or recreation until meditation, prayer, and dinner.

Sunday

8:00 -
9:30 a.m.
Community breakfast.
9:30 -
10:30 a.m.
Morning Prayer and Benediction
11:30 a.m. Mass at San Francesco Di Paola. Mass is often followed by various ministry needs. This may take a few minutes or a few hours, depending upon the activities scheduled at the church that day or the individual needs of parisioners.
6:00 p.m. Evening Prayer
6:30 p.m. Dinner.
8:00 p.m. Free time.
