Br. Derrick Elkins

Where do I begin? As I get older, I find it more difficult to separate my religious vocation and my interest in American Sign Language. It is so interesting how God can use childhood fascinations, along with a religious calling, to spread His gospel.

It all started in the heart of Cajun country, Church Point, LA. Church Point or as I know it, La Pointe de l’Eglise, is filled with a rich and incomparable history. It is known as the “Cajun Music Capital of the World”, featuring cultural activities, such as the Buggy Festival (La Capitaledes Boghets) and deep rooted traditions, such as the world renown, Mardi Gras, officially known to me as Courir de Mardi Gras. If you ever want a history lesson, or a place to visit, give me a call.

Growing up in a strong Catholic family, Church and Family have always been the center of my life. I was either going to church or going to a family gathering. From Sunday Masses to Crawfish Boils and Gumbo, life in Church Point always focused on these essential elements, normally one after the other. My call to the Priesthood came early in life and was followed by a strong desire to learn American Sign Language. Having several deaf friends while growing up, I began to understand the meaning of Deaf Culture and felt like a member to this second family. Now realizing that the Lord works in mysterious ways, I have begun my journey to the Priesthood within a Community whose apostolate is Deaf Ministry.

The Lord has blessed me by guiding my steps to where I am today. Religious Life is not easy, but with the Lord’s grace and mercy, it is fruitful.
